Obituary for Carlis Cleo Murphy Sr.

Carlis Cleo Murphy was the eighth child born to Bruer Melvin and Cora Mae (Whitaker) Murphy on November 14, 1935 in Millerton, Oklahoma. He departed this life on February 10, 2021 at Penrose Hospital at the age of 85 years.

Carlis graduated from Idabel High School and then moved with his family to Noble, Oklahoma where he met the love of his life, Joyce Gay (Dewitt) Murphy. They were married on November 18, 1957 and had just celebrated 63 years of marriage in 2020.

Carlis joined the U.S. Air Force on August 15, 1957 and served honorably in Civil Engineering for almost 23 years before he retired on April 30, 1980. During his tenure, he was sent to serve with the 366 Tactical Fighter Wing (The Gunfighters) in Danang, Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he went on to serve as the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor at the Myron Stratton Home in Colorado Springs for 20 years.

All his life, Carlis loved working on cars and fishing, as well as picking his guitar and singing. He was in local Country & Western bands almost everywhere he went, even in Vietnam. He played at several local clubs weekly in the Colorado Springs area in the 70's, 80's & 90's. However, in doing all that, he still somehow had time to spend time with his family taking vacations, fishing and attending the activities of his kids and grandkids.

Carlis was preceded in death by his Parents, five sisters: Mozelle, Bertha, Clara, Frankie and Ruby, and two brothers, Bruer Jr. and Gerald. Those who survive him include sister, Daisy; son, Carlis (Renee) C. Murphy Jr.; son, Jerry D. Murphy; son, Kevin (Pamela) W. Murphy; four grandchildren: Dustin (Cynthia) Murphy; Joshua (Samantha) Murphy; Reggie (Kacee) Murphy; and Zackary Murphy; and two great-grandchildren: Connor Murphy and Hunter Murphy.
