Obituary for Derek Alexander Bennett

Mr. Derek Alexander Bennett of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away on November 29, 2020 at his home. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Bennett and a graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in Wadesboro, North Carolina.

Derek was born on April 3,1962 in Wadesboro, North Carolina to Betty Jean Lewis and Thomas Bennett. He grew up in Wadesboro, North Carolina and graduated from Bowman Senior High School in 1979. Derek was a studious math student, an exceptional sketch artist, and an athlete on the track, field and wrestling teams. Derek joined the US Army in 1980 and served for 11 years in the Gulf War where he was the recipient of many awards. During his years in the Army, he traveled the world and was stationed in Korea and Germany for several years. Derek retired from the Army in 1992, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was employed at Microchip Technology for 26 years.

Derek had a love for music that spanned over his lifetime. He was a DJ during his early years in the military. He left a collection of nearly 3000 albums from different genres for his children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Derek was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by two sons, Donte Bennett and Antjuan Peebles-Bennett; one step-daughter, Simone Watson; two grandchildren, Gavin and Maurice, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Uncle Patrick (Edna) Lewis of Wadesboro; three sisters: Deirdre Lewis and Dorian Ingram of Brooklyn, New York and Dawn (Tommy) Rivers of Atlanta, Georgia; and three brothers, Darren Ingram, Dana Ingram, and David (Tomeca) Ingram of Pearl, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
