Obituary for E. Lewis "Lewis" Adkison

Local pastor of 64 years, E. Lewis Adkison died Thursday June 23, 2022. He was born in 1932 in Fort Worth, Texas. Lewis graduated from Hardin-Simmons Baptist University. He and his new bride Sara Fleming of Dallas were married Dec 29, 1953. Lewis attended and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Lewis and Sara moved to Colorado and started First Baptist Church of Security and served from 1958-1968.

Lewis was called to Circle Drive Baptist Church in 1968 and served there until his retirement in 2000.

While serving at Circle Drive, Lewis started a bus program and a T.V. program, "The Sunday Place." The church also had summer camps and youth retreats most notedly "Camp
Circle D.” "Preach," as Lewis was called, mentored many "Preacher boys."

His greatest joy was to see one of his "boys" go on to become a fruitful pastor. Lewis was granted an honorary doctorate degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He was the president of the Colorado Baptist Convention from 1965-1967 and again 1991-1992.

Lewis loved sports especially the Bronco's and the Nuggets. He played tennis at Colorado Springs Racquet Club until the age of 84. He had many friends there and will be missed by them. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sara, three children, Tony, Traci Cowger and Timothy as well as eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Upon retirement,
Lewis was interim pastor for eleven local churches including Vista Grande Baptist, Arapahoe Road Baptist, Garden Ranch Baptist and Heartsong Church. His last sermon was May 1, 2022, at Pikes Peak Park Baptist Church.

Viewing will be from4-6 PM at Evergreen funeral home on June 30, 2022. A funeral service will be held at Vista Grande Baptist Church at 10:00 AM on July 1, 2022, with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Dr. Mike Routt of Redemption Hill Church (formerly Circle Drive Baptist Church) will be presiding.
