Obituary for Herman Frank "Herm" Johnson

Herman (Herm) beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, peacefully died on March 25, 2022, in his home surrounded by love.

Herm is survived by his loving wife Donna and three children, Debbie (Dennis), Kenny (Sam) and Carol (Jerry), his eight grandchildren Mike (Kristi), Chad, Candice (Jason), Ryan (Rachael), Melissa (Carey), Josh (Amanda) and Shane (Leah). Herm is also the great grandfather to twenty-three children and a great-great grandfather to three children.

Herm was an auto mechanic for many years after retiring from the Army. He loved communicating with his friends around the world using his amateur ham radio. He loved spending time with his family and riding motorcycles. Herm was actively riding his motorcycle with friends and family until he was 90 years old, creating many memories which will never be forgotten. He was also a true animal lover, loving and spoiling many dogs during his lifetime. But more than anything Herm was an awesome father, always there for his kids, helping them, passing on his wisdom, and making them laugh.

Herm was born in Fort Payne, Alabama on March 27, 1927, to Herbert and Ora Johnson. Herm met his beloved wife of 73 years, Donna Jean Simpson, on a blind date October 31, 1949. They were married on December 9, 1949.

Herm served 20 years in the United States Army before retiring in 1966. Herm served his country in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, he was stationed overseas for 7.5 years. After his career in the Army, he worked as an auto-mechanic, a grocery store manager and in several other fields until officially retiring in 1990.

The hole in our hearts will never be filled. We will forever miss your jokes and infectious smile. We will cherish our memories until we are together again. We love you.

A visitation will be held at 2 pm on Friday, April 1st, followed by a Memorial Service at 3 pm at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colorado. Herm’s Military Honors will take place at Evergreen Funeral home at the conclusion of the Funeral Service.
