Obituary

James (Jim) Henry Cummins was born November 24, 1934 in Branson, Colorado. He is the son of James T. and Mabel (Shaw) Cummins. Jim is the youngest of three brothers (Don and Leo). All three went to Hoehne School east of Trinidad, CO. where Jim graduated from in 1952.

Jim loved basketball growing up and he played for Trinidad Junior College. Soon after his playing days, Jim moved to Greeley, CO. to further his college where he met his wife, Sandi Carter. They were married June 9th, 1957. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Colorado Springs and had four children. They have been residents here since then.

Jim (or “Jamie” some would call him) spent the majority of his career in the grocery business working for Safeway Stores, and retired in 1988. He enjoyed woodworking, either carving many different types of wildlife to give as gifts, or making birdhouses and other unique wood statue features that would decorate many yards of friends and family. Jim was a big sports fan and enjoyed attending all his kid’s events as they grew up, then later his grandchildren’s events as well when he could. In his later years he became a big Rockies fan.
Jim enjoyed giving back through either his church or as a member of the Colorado Springs Sertoma Club. He often would usher at church while his wife conducted the choir. Going camping and taking long road trips were his go-to approaches for family vacations.

Jim was a goofball. He often would be that guy that would make a funny face or say something amusing at the quietest time. He was a consistent kid at heart. He would start a conversation with any stranger.

Ultimately, a series of strokes took his life. He was a fighter for many years until a final stroke took his life on May 2, 2020.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandi and his brother Leo. Jim is survived by his brother Don Cummins (Ft. Lupton, CO); Jim’s four children: Brad and Stacey Cummins (Grand Junction, CO), Jaymie and Mike Pfahl (Colorado Springs, CO), Chris and David Gabel (Detroit , MI), and Michael and Teresa Cummins (Centennial, CO). Jim is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Jessica, Christopher, Cole, Brandon, Bailee, Cloey, Jeremie, Tristin, Chloe, Jackie, James, Brody and Taylor; and five great-grandchildren: Bryson, Landen, Peyton, Karrigen and Lennon.
