Obituary for Nancy Swofford Richards

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Nancy S. Richards, 77, of Colorado Springs, went to be with our Lord on Jan. 28, 2022. Nancy was born and raised in Cowpens, SC to Lewis and Ruth Swofford. She graduated Cowpens High School in 1962, and then began the adventure that was to be her adult life. She met her love, Bruce Richards, in Columbia, SC, while he was stationed at Fort Jackson. They married in 1968 in Hawaii, while Bruce was on R&R from his first tour in Vietnam. As a military spouse, Nancy traveled the world with her family. She raised 2 children, Daphne Richards Burlingame, and Bruce Richards Jr., while moving every 2-3 years with the Army. Every posting offered new experiences, new places to visit, and instilled a love of travel and exploration in her children. Bruce and Nancy retired from Army life to Colorado Springs in 1988, where Nancy worked in government service at the Air Force Academy library, and with Army Community Outreach (ACS) at Fort Carson. She even learned to drive a large RV in order to bring services to young military families in the Colorado Springs community.
After her God, Nancy’s greatest love was her family. She retired from government service to help care for her grandchildren, Laurel and Grant Burlingame and Indyra Richards. They have loving memories of after-school pickups and snacks, and always having their Grandmom at every school party, band concerts, sports games, and any other event in their lives. She enjoyed annual sister’s trips with her 4 sisters and visiting “home” in South Carolina. She and Bruce continued to exercise their love of travel with trips both close and abroad. The picture here is from their last trip to Germany. The sign reads “Life is an Adventure, dare it!”, which is just how she lived.
Nancy’s second love was finding a treasure! Whether it be at Estate Sales, garage sales, or her favorite thrift stores, she was always on the hunt for a gem to add to her many collections, or to sell through Nancy’s Good Old Stuff at antique shows or on eBay. Nancy was a big supporter of Crossfire Ministries by donating food, shopping their thrift store and bake sales, and attending the Christmas tea. Please donate to this Christian ministry that serves Colorado Springs families in need in lieu of flowers. Donations can be made on-line at crossfireministries.org, or by mail to Crossfire Ministries, PO Box 9650, Colorado Springs, CO 80932. Please note that the donation is made in honor of Nancy Richards on the check or on-line donation.
Nancy is now reunited in Heaven with those who preceded her in death, to include her siblings Joe Swofford, Francis Berry, Peggy Robinson, and Polly Bullman. She will be greatly missed by those who she has left behind, to include her husband Bruce Richards, her children Daphne Burlingame (Martin) and Bruce Richards Jr. (Bobbi), her grandchildren Laurel and Grant Burlingame and Indyra Richards, and many close friends and extended family.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, Feb. 11, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral Room at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E Bijou St, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
