Obituary for Oscar Ravenell Hinson

Oscar Ravenell Hinson, 96, peacefully left us on August 24, 2022. He was born on December 3, 1925 to Buron and Earline Hinson in Hohenwald, Tennessee. He joined the Navy in 1939 at age 14 and was active duty from 1942-1947. In 1948, Oscar joined the Army, retiring Dec. 31, 1961 after obtaining the rank of Sergeant Major.

He served in WWII as a petty officer in charge of enlisted personnel and saw combat in the Pacific Theatre. He also served in the Korean War. Sergeant Hinson “possessed a high degree of leadership ability by demonstrating initiative, vigor, aggressiveness, courage, willpower, decisiveness, and self confidence. He was skilled in leading men and directing group activities to a common goal.” The size of his unit was 236 men. He was a sharpshooter with a rifle, and received an Army commendation metal, Good conduct metal, and an expert Infantry Badge. Oscar was a humble soldier and his other awards and commendations are too numerous to mention; many unknown to his family. He worked for the Air Force as a Civil Servant from 1963-1985 and finished his career as a Bus Driver for Widefield District #3 from 1986-1995. He retired at the age of 70 in 1995. Oscar joined The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) in 1986, where he served as treasurer until 2018. He continued to work as treasurer for AFTEA and the Sergeant Majors Chapter until 2021.

He purchased his beloved home in 1955 where he resided until his passing. He loved teaching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to fish and hunt, and excelled in both bowling and golf.

Oscar is survived by his loving children Donald Wayne Hinson (Swanda), Karolyn Diane Superba (Stjepan), Cheryl Lynn Failing, Sandra Kay Niskern (David), Grandchildren Michell Katherine Raczkowski (Joe), Brandon Scott Martin, Aaron James Hinson (Mandi), Savannah Marie Jade, Tarah Lynn Tran (Sunny), Ryan David Niskern (Victoria), Great Grandchildren Calvin Michael Martin, Ava Katherine Raczkowski, Dean Nicolas Raczkowski, Oscar James Hinson, Curtis Wayne Hinson, Tate Keith Niskern, Samira Dawn Tran, Aurora Grace Tran, and Great Great Granddaughter Morgan Margarite Martin.
