Obituary for Rosalie Joan Fleury
Rosalie Fleury, beloved wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away on May 23, 2019. After a gradual decline in strength and health, she died peacefully in her sleep and entered eternal life. She was 96 years young and was born on July 24, 1922 in Flushing, New York.
Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents and her spouse of 60 years, Frank. They had a long, happy marriage and lived in Brooklyn, NY, Old Bridge, NJ, Kendall Park, NJ, and Colorado Springs for over 30 years. Rosalie met Frank before he went into the army as a paratrooper during World War II and then married when he returned from Europe after the war. They had a beautiful wedding on January 6, 1946, at St. Mary’s Church in Flushing, NY, and a honeymoon at Niagara Falls.
Rosalie was a secretary in New York and then became a stay-at-home mom after the birth of her first child. In those early years she was an avid soap opera lover, book reader, at-home game show contestant, and delighted in traveling to New York for Broadway shows. She also loved the almost weekly family excursions to the Jersey shore and swimming in the ocean. She provided a loving home with stability for the children and constant care. She was an excellent Italian cook and her meals continue on in her children’s homes. As the years went on, she crocheted and gave away many afghans, loved a mean game of scrabble with her sister, loved reading books (1-2 per week), and passed that pleasure on to her children. Game shows continued with the Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and she was still beating out contestants (at home) in her 90’s. And card games of Hand and Foot and May I often turned into hysterical bouts of uncontrolled laughter due to what someone said or did.
Rosalie and Frank lived in New Jersey for over 20 years but especially loved Colorado and all of their outdoor excursions. Dad bought a boat and named it Frisco for Rosalie. They even hiked down the Grand Canyon to Indian Gardens. Two of their exciting vacations were a cruise in the Caribbean and three weeks in Germany visiting their daughter, Jeannette and traveling to three other countries there. They loved visiting their children, attending weddings and other family get-togethers, attending grandchildren’s school and scout activities, and watching their grandchildren grow.
Rosalie is survived by one sibling, Mary Weisenburger of Colorado Springs, and four children, Clifford (Nancy) Fleury of Brielle, NJ, Jeannette (Larry) Suhr and Gregory (Carla) Fleury of Colorado Springs, and Lisa (Rick) Conyers of England, AR; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Allison, Kristin, Breandon, Caragh, Erin, and Kitten, and seven great grandchildren, Hana, Ethan, Cooper, Athena, Henley, Collen and Theodore, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation, 10:00AM, Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 4925 North Carefree Circle, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80917. Rosary will be held at 10:3AM, and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00AM. Burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 Hancock Expressway, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80903.
The family would like to recognize the staff at Brookdale Vista Grande and the Brookdale Hospice team for their love and support of Rosalie over the last two years. She was cared for by Jeannette and Larry at their home for eleven years prior.
