Obituary for Tommy Dale Anderson

Tommy Dale Anderson, a long-time resident of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the age of 71.

Tommy was born in Newman Grove, Nebraska where he grew up on a family farm and enjoyed bowling, trapping, and graduated from Fremont High School. He went on to Colorado State University where he obtained a Bachelors degree in Parks Administration and Horticulture.

Tommy’s first job after graduation was at the Broadmoor Hotel where he would go on to create a legacy of 43 years. For the first 20 years, Tommy was the Superintendent for the Broadmoor Golf Course. He designed the 18 hole Mountain Course, and made numerous improvements to the other two 18 hole courses where many professional golf tournaments took place, including the U.S. Women’s Open and the U.S. Mens Senior Open. He would ultimately become the Director of Grounds and Landscape. He oversaw a multi-year enhancement program and with Tommy at the helm, his crew’s efforts turned the Broadmoor Hotel’s landscaping from rock gardens and railroad ties to what you see now: hundreds of flower pots, thousands of trees and shrubs, beautiful and ornate flower beds, flowered Juliet balconies and expansive lawn areas.

A few of Tommy’s many accomplishments through the years include: Broadmoor Wildland Fire Team (2012-2013) where he earned his Red Card at 64 years old, Manager of the Year (2006), Manager of the Quarter (2005), Turf Professional of the Year RMRTA (1996), Vice President of RMRTA (1991), President of RMGCSA (1980), Director of RMGCSA (1975-1979), President of Pikes Peak Turf Association (1976), Elder at Emmanuel Lutheran Church (1975-1976), Sportsmanship of the Year at Fremont High School (1967), Jr National Championship Singles (1966), Jr National Championship Doubles First Place (1964), and lifetime member of the GCSAA.

Tommy was an avid golfer, a passionate scuba diver, an art and coin collector, and an animal lover. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hiking, camping, and fishing with his family. He was a jokester, a talker, and friend to many. His smile, laugh and social personality won the hearts of all those around him. Above all, Tommy was a great father and loved his children and grandchildren more than anything.

Tommy was preceded in life by his father Dale, his mother Ruth, and sister Gloria. Surviving members of his family include his son, Troy and his wife Trish, his daughter, Julie and her husband Carl, his son, Dane and his wife Kristina, his grandchildren Ryan and his wife Shaylen, Danny and his wife Rochelle, Lauren and her husband Wyatt, Oren, Cassidy and his wife Tierney, Cody and his wife Marina, and his great grandchildren Bryleigh, Carter, and Maysen.

A Celebration of Life for Tommy will take place on July 24th from 11:00am to 3:00pm in the Donald Ross Room at the Broadmoor at 1 Lake Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906.
