Pre-Planning Your Funeral

What You Should Know

More and more people are pre-planning their funeral to save their loved ones the stress of having to make arrangements during such an emotional time. When you make your own arrangements, you are ensuring your final wishes will be met. A pre-paid funeral plan is like a gift to your loved ones. Setting aside money to take care of any large, expected expense is a smart thing to do, and a funeral is no different. Arranging your final wishes, whether it be cremation or burial, in advanced, allows your loved ones to be free from having to make decisions about things like an urn, the type of casket, what kind of service, or cemetery property. When they don't have too much to wonder what you wanted or about spending too much or too little, they will have more time with family and friends to begin the healing process and be comforted by the fact your final wishes have been met. It's not uncommon for family members to want different things for their loved one who has passed. Even when sharing your final wishes with family, they can have a hard time remembering what they were if you haven't written them down. When you make final arrangements in advance, you eliminate any confusion and avoid any family disagreements that can cause stress at an already stressful time. Putting a funded plan in place guarantees your wishes are clear and easy to follow and ensures your legacy is in your hands. A study in 2021 by the NFDA put median costs for a funeral with a viewing at 7,848.00 versus 6,970.00 for a viewing and cremation. Some states require you include a burial vault to protect the casket, which will make a burial more expensive: approximately 9,420.00. One way to pay for your final expenses is to purchase a trust-based, pre-paid, funeral plan. Financing plans are available, interest free. You can choose payments from 12-60 months making it as affordable as you need. Plans require a minimum of 15% down and there is no penalty for pre-payment. Putting a plan in place "locks-in" the pricing and offers protection against rising costs and you will never pay anything additional unless you add to the contract. If you sign the contract as irrevocable, the contract is permanent and cannot be changed or cancelled. This is especially helpful for those who are qualifying for a Medicaid exclusion.
