What You Should Know & FAQ's
Funeral Home FAQ's cover topics like the initial steps families need to take after a loved one passes, required information for death certificates, service options (burial vs. cremation), personalization, and costs.
Key questions include what information funeral directors need, how to plan a personalized service, what embalming is and who is required to be embalmed, and what cost expectations.
Before a Death
Pre-paid Plans: You can make pre-arrangements for your own funeral which ensure your wishes for services, burial, or cremation are followed. Pre-paid plans also lock in pricing of the funeral home. In some instances, we may be able to honor another funeral home's pre-paid plan. You will need to provide your funeral director with the appropriate documentation for consideration.
Gathering Information: Keep a list of important documents, such as your loved one's birth date, birthplace, parents' names, Social Security number, level of education, and if applicable, military service information, especially your loved one's DD214.
When a Death Occurs
Contact the Funeral Home: The Funeral Director will guide you through the process and coordinate with the cemetery or crematory.
Information for Death Certificate: The Funeral Home will assist you with gathering the necessary information for the death certificate.
Decide on Service Type: You will need to decide if the service will be a burial or a cremation, or possibly a combination of both. The Funeral Director will advise you based on your choice, whether embalming is required.
Service Planning & Personalization
What to Expect: You can expect to meet with the funeral director to make arrangements, which include discussing type of service and service location.
Obituary Notices: An obituary can be posted on the funeral home's website at no cost to the family and/or in a local newspaper, detailing your loved one's life. The cost for publishing in a newspaper is dependent on length. Your funeral director will provide you with a proof and the cost.
Understanding Costs & Services
Funeral Costs: The total cost of a funeral or memorial service depends on the selected services, such as viewing, transportation, embalming, casket or crematory and any ancillary items such as, flowers, memorial book, and folders, etc.
Embalming: Embalming is a process that sanitizes and temporarily preserves the body but is not required in all instances. Your funeral director will explain when embalming is required based on your choices.
