Frederick Alvah Dickinson, age 87, died Thursday, March 7, 20123, at Viewpointe Retirement Home.
Fred was born January 19, 1926, in Benton, Maine to Everett and Eva (Brooks) Dickinson. In the fall of 1943, Fred enlisted in the Army Air Corp and after basic training was assigned to the Grand Island, Nebraska, Army Air Base as a B-29 mechanic. He was part of a select group to train under the supervision of the man who helped perfect the B-29 engine for Boeing Aircraft Company. While there, he met his wife, Mary Ellen Yorty, a civil service employee, when both were required to attend a class on identifying engine part and stock numbers in the Boeing document. They were married on December 8, 1945.
After WWII, Fred attended college under the GI Bill, earning a Bachelors Degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and a Masters Degree from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. In 1984, Fred retired after 25 years of teaching for Air Academy School District #20. Fred taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades endearing himself to his students by taking the most troublesome boys fishing on Saturday as a reward for good behavior.
In his retirement years, Fred became very involved in all aspect of conservation and wildlife, especially birds. His passion was painting Colorado scenery with birds, usually ducks and cranes flying above.
